Micky van de Ven Double Halts The Toffees' Run at Brand New Stadium

Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.
