"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous fans have openly petitioned for the honor.

The evidence suggests something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career performing shows at small eateries with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the greatest ensembles, they're a close trio. Their music videos often show them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

Grammy Nod

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project came out of a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that strange transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The themes track departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Legacy

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

Yet Haim will consistently be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
