RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
